Paul Bryan Roach is a surgeon, author, and civic writer. His work moves between the operating room and the page — between the practice of medicine and the practice of citizenship. He is the author of three books: the memoir Citizen Surgeon, the nonfiction work The End, and the novel Jack's Rogues.
Paul Bryan Roach trained as a scholar of eschatology long before he trained as a surgeon. He was the kind of student who wanted to know what the great writers — the theologians, the philosophers, the poets — had said about the last things, and who believed that the answers mattered even to people who would never set foot in a divinity school. Decades later, standing at the bedside of patients whose bodies were failing in ways he could slow but not reverse, he turned that same training on the moment that matters most — the encounter between a dying person and the people who love them.
That work became The End, a book on mortality, end-of-life care, and the conversations we postpone too long. The memoir Citizen Surgeon carried the same questions back into a military-medicine context, asking what it means to serve a republic as both a surgeon and a soldier. The novel Jack's Rogues sent those questions into a 1920s Atlantic port town, where a young surgeon takes cases the official hospitals turn away and pays for the cases he takes.
Roach is a working surgeon and a working writer. He treats the prophetic tradition as load-bearing rather than as doctrine — a way of naming what every clinician has watched at the bedside — and he treats his readers as the adults they are. His work is written for the adult child watching a parent fade, for the physician who has run out of ways to begin the hard conversations, and for the reader who simply wants to be ready when their own time comes.
